Getting off gas and shifting your usage: the real way to cut your power bill long-term

They're the ones who also changed *when* they use power, not just *what* they use.

Step one: get off gas

Ducted reverse cycle heating and cooling is dramatically more efficient than gas ducted heating. A gas system burns fuel to make heat directly — at best you get out roughly what you put in. A reverse cycle system moves heat rather than generating it, so for every unit of electricity it uses, it can deliver three or four units of heating or cooling. Step two: the part most people miss — shift your usage to daylight hours

Going all-electric only saves real money long-term if you're also using that electricity when it's cheapest to make — which, if you've got solar, means daylight hours. A battery helps store the excess for the evening, but the cheapest kWh you'll ever use is the one you consume the moment the sun makes it, before it ever touches the battery or the grid. A few practical habits make a genuine difference:

  • Heat pump hot water — set it to heat during the day, not overnight. Hot water stored in a well-insulated tank holds its heat until evening, so there's no need to heat it at 2am on off-peak power when you could heat it for free at 11am on solar.
  • Heating and cooling — where you can, pre-cool or pre-heat the house in the early-to-mid afternoon while the panels are producing flat out, rather than cranking the ducted system after dark when you're pulling straight from the battery or the grid.
  • Pool heat pumps — exactly the same principle. Run the pool pump and heater through the middle of the day. A pool has huge thermal mass, so heat added at 1pm is still there in the evening.
  • Dishwasher and washing machine — most modern units have a delay-start function. Set them to run mid-morning through mid-afternoon instead of after dinner, and that load runs on solar you've already paid for rather than drawing down the battery or importing from the grid at night.

Why this matters more with a battery in the picture

A battery is there to cover the load you genuinely can't shift — lighting, the fridge, the TV in the evening. Every load you successfully move into daylight hours is one less thing your battery has to discharge for, which means it lasts longer each cycle and covers more of your usage before you ever draw from the grid. It's the difference between a battery that's working hard every single evening and one that's barely needed most days.

The bottom line

Electrifying the home — reverse cycle instead of gas, a heat pump instead of a gas or electric hot water service, induction instead of gas cooking — removes the ongoing cost of a second fuel bill entirely. Add solar, a battery, and genuinely shifting your big loads into daylight hours, and you're not just saving on the gas connection fee — you're maximising the value of every panel on the roof.
