GoodWe ESA and Tesla Powerwall 3 are the two batteries we get asked to compare most often. We'll say upfront: Solar On Electrical installs and services the GoodWe ESA range, sourced locally through AWM Echuca — we don't install Powerwall. So take the local-support section below as our honest bias, and everything else as a straight, spec-by-spec comparison to help you decide either way.
Capacity and how they scale
- GoodWe ESA — modular 5kWh or 8kWh battery blocks, stacked up to 96kWh total. Start with what you need now (from 16kWh) and add capacity later without replacing the whole system.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 — a fixed 13.5kWh per unit, with multiple units installed side by side for more capacity. Less granular — you're always adding in 13.5kWh steps.
Warranty and expected lifespan
Both batteries carry the same headline warranty structure: 10 years, with the manufacturer guaranteeing at least 70% of original capacity at the end of that period. Where they differ is cycle life — GoodWe rates the ESA at 6,000+ cycles (roughly 15+ years of normal daily use), while Tesla's warranty covers unlimited cycles for standard solar self-consumption. In practice, most homes cycle a battery once a day, so both comfortably outlast their 10-year warranty window under normal use.
Backup power when the grid goes down
- GoodWe ESA — backup switchover is built into the unit, switching in under 4 milliseconds — fast enough that sensitive electronics don't even notice.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 — backup capability requires Tesla's separate Backup Gateway hardware, an additional cost on top of the battery itself.
Worth knowing either way: our current GoodWe ESA pricing (below) is for the battery without backup switched on — like Tesla, we quote automatic backup as an add-on, not a default inclusion.
Price, installed in Echuca and Moama
- GoodWe ESA — currently $8,900 (16kWh), $11,900 (24kWh), $14,900 (32kWh) or $17,900 (40kWh) installed, cash, the Solar Victoria rebate/loan or the NSW Sustainable Home Loan (no third-party finance). Before the federal battery rebate below is applied.
- Tesla Powerwall 3 — a single 13.5kWh unit typically installs for $12,000–$16,000, largely because the base unit ($11,200) doesn't include the compulsory Backup Gateway (a further $1,950) or installation. Also before the federal rebate.
Both are Clean Energy Council-approved battery systems, so both currently qualify for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program — around a 30% discount, applied upfront by your installer, tapering into tiers from May 2026 as battery size increases. It's worth checking current rates at the time you get a quote, since the program is stepping down over time.
Local sourcing and support
This is where we're not neutral: GoodWe ESA is sourced through AWM Echuca, our local wholesaler, which means parts, warranty claims and support stay in the region rather than routing through a national call centre. Tesla services Powerwall through its own dedicated installer and support network — a genuine strength if you want to stay inside Tesla's ecosystem, but it isn't a local one.
The bottom line
Spec for spec, GoodWe ESA and Tesla Powerwall 3 are closer than most marketing lets on — same 10-year, 70%-capacity warranty, both CEC-approved for the same federal rebate, both needing an add-on for full backup. Where GoodWe pulls ahead for most of our customers is modular scaling (buy exactly the capacity you need, not fixed 13.5kWh steps), faster built-in backup switching, and support that's local to Echuca-Moama rather than a national queue. If you're set on staying in the Tesla ecosystem, Powerwall remains a genuinely well-built battery — just not one we install.
